October 21, 2026. Reporting checked at 16:09 UTC. Both UKMTO notices were posted after this morning's brief was checked.
What happened
UKMTO warning 179-26 reports that a tanker 11 nautical miles west of Bukha, Oman, in the Strait of Hormuz, was struck by an unknown projectile at 01:45 UTC on October 21. Local authorities say the strike started a fire, which has been extinguished. The tanker is at anchor and all crew are reported safe.
Warning 180-26 is a late report from a tanker's master. That ship was struck by an unknown projectile 30 nautical miles southeast of Al Faw, Iraq, at 18:30 UTC on October 20, with crew safe and no damage reported. Neither notice names the vessels or an attacker.
Why it matters
The two incidents, ~7 hours apart at opposite ends of the Gulf, are the first attacks UKMTO has reported since the October 18 tug strike. The Al Faw report places a strike in the northern Gulf waters used by tankers loading Iraqi crude. Neither notice reports a disruption to loadings.
UKMTO describes projectiles, not mines. The notices do not confirm the IRGC's October 20 claims that tankers hit mines south of Hormuz.
What to watch
Watch for vessel identification, any JMIC assessment (the latest, Update 106, is dated October 18) and war-risk quotes for Hormuz and Iraqi loadings. Our morning brief covers the diplomatic backdrop.
